Published in 2005 by George Braziller and The Noguchi Museum, this book accompanied the exhibition curated by the author which reconstructed a lost chapter of Surrealist history . With an introduction by Ingrid Schaffner, a major essay by List, and additional essays by Paul B. Franklin & Lowell Cross, Julien Levy, Dorothea Tanning, Richard Filipowski, and Jonathan Levy Bayer. It was nominated for the College Art Association's Alfred H. Barr, Jr. Award.

The Imagery of Chess Revisited book led to considerable subsequent research, writing, and curatorial work in the realm of chess-related art. In 2006 List was appointed a research specialist to The Man Ray Trust. In 2025 he published a book based on his research.
Permanent Attraction: Man Ray & Chess was published Hirmer/Verlag. New York & Munich in 2025. With a Foreword by Francis M. Naumann, List compiled the first comprehensive book on over 200 of Man Ray’s chess-themed artworks in all media and in the words of curator Michael B. Taylor “filled the last remaining gap in Man Ray scholarship.”
JACK DAMER: Prints, Drawings & Objects
List holds degrees in printmaking & painting. Early on, he worked at Scuola Internazionale di Arte Grafica, Rome, Italy, Lakeside Studio, Michigan, and for Warrington Colescott as an edition printer. With Thomas Cvikota he co-authored a book in 2025 on the Influential yet little-known American lithographer and professor Jack Damer.
JACK DAMER: Prints, Drawings & Objects was published by Distillery Design, Madison, Wisconsin & TC Editions, Chicago in 2025. The book details the life and work of the artist who had a budding professional exhibition career but then abandoned connections to the gallery world in order to pursue the “pure visual research” he shared through 50 years of pedagogy and mentorship of such major talents as Appropriation artist Sherrie Levine.
